Congratulations!
May I ask cause your portraits looks like it's done really well... How long does it takes to finish a masterpiece like this?

Re: Portrait Background
This time it took quite a lot of time, mostly because I was never satisfied with the final outcome and I felt the need of adding some more detail, recolour some part or re-work them. I can tell you how much it took for the statue, because I watched the clock: 2 hours.Grodanknorr wrote:Congratulations!

But if I'm inspired I can complete one background faster. This one is the new entry for the current contest, I made it in just one day:
Granted, it's not detailed as the previous one, but I'm pretty happy about the final outcome.

Yay! That's a gorgeous background there. Congrats!

Re: Portrait Background
I'm amazed Pish, really really nice work. I loved the previous one you did too. Can I ask how on earth you started something like this? Which programme you used to draw it and where you get your inspiration from?!

I like the sneaky getting in of the cross of StGeorge on the ship, or the white ensign.

Re: Portrait Background
I guess the inspiration comes from the theme of the contest itself. If you are not familiar with it, you must know that Apollo proposes every month a new theme to which background artists are supposed to stick.Rubydeath wrote:I'm amazed Pish, really really nice work. The theme of my very first winning background was "luck". Apparently I was the only one who associated luck with seafaring depicting good omens for sailors (St. Elmo's fire and an albatross).
April's theme was "Flower and showers". I was very disappointed by this theme, because personally I'm a bit sick of girlish themes such as candies (december), valentine (february), rainbows/luck (march), flowers (april)... I even started a rebellion against what I called the Care Bear Conspiracy. Then...
Instead of out-of-the-box, I eventually came out with this inside-the-puddle solution which for me was the best way to "sneakily getting in", like James pointed out, religious and national symbols that otherwise OOO wouldn't have let go in....Apollo wrote:Pishkirlin... I strongly suggest that you try thinking outside the box. For example, take a look at your own crew name and have a little think about that.
This month's theme is way more cool, as it's "Puzzle Backgrounds": a search for puzzle-themed backgrounds. The one I have posted obviously represents Navigation.
As for the programme I use, it's Photoshop.

Re: Portrait Background
As photoshop is not really a drawing programme do I assume you get images elsewhere and heavily manipulate them to do so much so quickly?

Re: Portrait Background
No, no. Photoshop can work as a drawing programme as well... I have created everything from the scratch.JamesStGeorge wrote:As photoshop is not really a drawing programme do I assume you get images elsewhere and heavily manipulate them to do so much so quickly?

Re: Portrait Background
I really need a break from the background contests. I wanted to take one last month too, but the theme was so inspiring I couldn't help entering. This month the theme is not the best for me, so it's really time to step aside. But I would really like to encourage Acerin to enter, since he's a great designer. Hey, Acerin... why don't you enter the competition?Grodanknorr wrote:

Re: Portrait Background
Gimp is freeware. But I haven't managed to understand how it works. But I guess it's just me. I'm getting old and anything that I can't understand in a 5-minutes first attempt it's only going to get on my nerves.Grodanknorr wrote:I wanna enter aswell but... Don't worry, I suck at colouring too, so I bet you still have a chance with CG.

I have managed to persuade Acerin to enter the contest! His background is awesome, I think he should share it with all of us. Post it, post it, Ace!
