Yay! I've made it! One of my entries has finally been selected as a portrait background!!!

For the first if you made that one you must be awesome with drawing in the computer

I have made also this one, that unfortunately it has not been selected. I like it even more than the first one.



And in January I had another unlucky one.



This is pretty much all I have done so far.

The first one is really cool.
the second one is too scary.
the last one is too venice (romantic) for pirates

guess why they choose the first one? lol xD

I disagree on the third one. They have chosen other backgrounds that are much more romantic and not really suitable for the game. Actually I have just complained that the themes they choose are too flower-power, care-bear and not very piratey.
The second one scary? If you say so.

i personally think the first one was the best.
but i gotta run now, school starts!

Makes me regret buying that portrait a few weeks ago. If only you had told me earlier!

I couldn't agree more, it's like the graphics designers gone nuts because of valentines day and just forgot for a few weeks that this is game is about pirates!

It's easier that one may think. I am surprised myself of the results I have achieved in such a short time, but I must confess I know how to work in Photoshop quite well. I was only ignoring that you can use it for drawing as well! Then one day I came across a tutorial on deviantart.com and since then I have started practicing a bit. You might remember my entry from the art contest last year:

There is no big difference in what I did there and the new artworks, except for details. I don't think it took me more than a couple of hours for drawing "Saint George and zucchini", while I have spent several days for the last entries, but I'm learning from practice and while I have spent a lot of time on Venice, I have made the green-man forest in no time (around 8 hours). The secret is tutorials and practice. I have first learned how to use the pen tool and the layers, then found my colouring technique and lastly the special effects. Before I started I had the feeling I couldn't ever learn how to colour the drawing (I am a decent free-hand illustrator, but I fail at colouring with any medium from pencils to watercolours and oil), but once I learned how to do that, the rest was piece of cake as I gained a lot of confidence in myself.
If you have any leaning towards art, you should definitely try.

I dosn't totally agreed ... Ofcourse a tutorial is good but the two most important things...

But don't forgett tutorials is also good!

nah... i am totaly a Zero in art things... in the spring festvail, if asked to paint i will just do my draw in paint like last time... i dont even have photoshop lol

Presumably it will be available for only a certain time, or don't they do limited editions for portrait backgrounds? Not that they obey the law over limited editions anyway, as with the pet ones that keep coming back.

There is an Open-Source program called GIMP wich has all the same functions as Photoshop. I have toyed around with it a little bit and after learning (or customizing your own) interface it should be just as easy to use and powerful as Photoshop.

Not sure about that, all other pets are walking pets. A seagull is a flying bird. It would take a lot of effort to design flying pets.

But if they come, someone should totaly get a black seagull!

Yes, it's a limited edition and it will only be available for a month, I guess. The theme was "luck" and I chose to depict two good omens (hence the title "Good Omens") for seafearers: Saint Elmo's fire (the blue glow on the ship) and an albatross.

I saw your portrait. Nice! I logged on this morning to get mine, but I have been caught by someone who had to give me another prize and I have spent the whole time I had chatting with her. Not sure if I can log during my lunch break, while at night I know I can't, so I might actually have to wait until tomorrow. And I haven't even been awarded with the Dread Masterpiece trophy. Grrrr. x-(
