Re: Hic sunt dracones
These are the direct Quotes from YPPedia
When NPPs are challenged to a Swordfight, Rumble or Drinking match, they may say one of the following things:
This island is so peaceful, I would hate to ever leave. (20)
Har! (20)
Swill works, but the fine rum lasts longer. (20)
Did you hear the cannon shots last night? (10)
This island makes the best rum! I swear it! (12)
Four years of mime college... and this is the only job I can find? (1)
Go ahead, just ignore me, I don't mind... (2)
I think I left the bathtub running. (2)
Have you ever seen a Kraken? (2)
Arrr matey, beware the black ship! (3)
Hushed voices speak of an old man that lives alone on an island near here... (2)
They say that there was once a master swordsman who lived on this island, but that he disappeared one night. (2)
The most important thing you should learn is to never believe anything said by pirates with white names. (1)
Numbers in bold brackets (20) indicate the probability of that phrase being said, out of 97. So (1) indicates that it is seen about 1/97th of the time.
Please note that different pirates may hear different things from the same NPP compared to you.
So I could be there a long time as it's very difficult to find a swabbie in a position to have the chat circle in... they all be hiding behind the bar...but the good news is i'm grand master rumble...lol...

I'm interested in finding out what the original quote about the Old Man was. It has been removed now, so don't waste your time challenging the swabbies.mmiimmii wrote:Please note that different pirates may hear different things from the same NPP compared to you.

Re: Hic sunt dracones
well there used to be a reference to the old man before the viridian and cobalt oceans. I'll try to find out what it actually said. it was lost soon after they wetre made.
_____
have u ever met the old man on oyster island
dated august 2003. apparently that's what they used to say but it's not listed on the known quotes. the closest one is have you ever seen a kraken
____
i am looking at releases close to the launch of viridian/cobalt oceans. it says that on 2004-12-15, a couple of months before the launch, that "The old salts in inns now have more detailed and more reliable information." this could be when it was lost although it is quite ambiguous.

No one has found the tombstone, nor the original quote about the Old Man. So I believe the mission is still ongoing.Tangoose wrote:has this thing ended or is just nobody responding?

About the phrase of the old man on oyster...Demeter has directed me to the orignal quote .
"Have you ever met the old man who lives on Oyster island?"
And the follow up qoute is..."You know what I think? I don't think there is any old man on any stupid Oyster Island."
* original quote-forums -game design/npp cryptic phrases dated sept 9 2003
*follow-uo quote forums-shore leave/respectable gina knows the old man dated feb 20 2005
( I think Tangoose got the original quote first...woot!)

Re: Hic sunt dracones
There is at least another quote about the Old Man. I would also focus on the verb tenses and the date of the posts in order to solve the mystery.
P.S. Do you bother the OMs for our silly games?!

I think I got here too late for this lol but I just found a quote that I think hasn't been mentioned xD No idea if it counts or if this is what Pish is looking for, but I'll give it a try xD...
I heard that Intelligent Lefty once said:
"They say that the old man on Oyster Island was once the mightiest swordsman in these waters."

Actually i didn't think it was an OM i was e-mailing..just general inquires...but i guess Demeter is an OM...just trying to be resourceful....and this isn't a silly game...it's a fun game as i have always said...you make the bestest missions...

Re: Hic sunt dracones
I start suspecting that the Old Man from Oyster Island is not Tiram's father. Anyone else does either?
Pishkirlin- Crew: : Knights of Saint George
Re: Hic sunt dracones
It's possible that he isn't- it could just be a coincidence;
But since we haven't proved anything to say so.. and it's just a thought, not neccessarily.
On the other hand- I doubt you would have brought it up if it had some element of truth..
sooo... yes i am also suspecting that

Re: Hic sunt dracones
It is questionable that there even is such a man on Oyster Island. I wouldn't belive swabbies, the even tell you not to belive in them...
I don't think they are reliable sources of information

Re: Hic sunt dracones
And in the frist place- we only really made an assumption about the old man beign her father because they both came from oyster and he was an old man..
I'm sure there are more old men on the ocean XD

also i have heard...He used to live all alone in a little shack just behind the curve of Oyster. If you were very quiet and happened to be the only one on the island, sometimes you could see him fishing in the cove. He'd dash as soon as he saw you though.
And then of course, the island was colonized. I don't think he much liked all the noise of construction. One of my hearties saw him slip off in a rowboat headed towards the south. Who know how far he went?
there is no mention of a wife and daughter...DOH !!!... he's alone...so i think the wrong old man....
i think i will look some more...

Re: Hic sunt dracones
Sneaking on the forums I managed to find this:
This suggests that his tombstone is located on one of the "expedition islands". Possible one of the ones our flag just mapped?
Adding more information from the Yppedia (http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Trophy) I have more proof to my theory.
Info about the Oyster medal ( spoiler alert! )
With the implementation of expeditions we have sadly discovered the fate of the Old Man from Oyster Island.

Re: Hic sunt dracones
Apparently that was the trigger, now after thousands of expeditions and no tomb found, I start thinking that something must have changed in the meantime. They changed the name of the trophy as well, from "Visited Old Man from Oyster Island" to "Oyster". Either that or the tomb is on an atoll we haven't visited yet / it spawns randomly and we are just not lucky enough.Piratus wrote:Any confirmation on this?

Re: Hic sunt dracones
What is the location of the tombstone is not only random but it's instead fixed? We always pillage more or less in the same area... what if there is a specific league point or a route where the tombstone spawn? We should try pillaging on different routes!!!

Perhaps the location mirror the lacotion of Oyster island?

Re: Hic sunt dracones
i looked about, but couldnt got a lot of information. Only saw 2 guys saying about that. One of them was from sage ocean, but he couldnt be sure about the location where he find the tombstone, but he believed it was near auk island. Both guys were in a boat with 50 people, coincidence? maybe. Sunday i am planning to run a WB pillage near auk. All the tips can be usefull... maybe u cant find the tombstone in a sloop...
(yes, i know that u cant put 50 in a WB... but since i dont have a WF... lol)
